08 Mei 2016 | Roemenië, Sibiu

Friday evening we went to Sibiu with our mentor. We went for a lovely dinner at Lily Vanilli. This is a restaurant in the centre of Sibiu. We thought it was great to finally see some more of Romania than the supermarket and the main street of Cornatel. The centre was beautiful. The centre was divided in two squares. Mare and mic, that is Romanian for big and small. On these squares was a flower market. Around the square there are a lot of restaurants.

Yesterday the weather was quite bad. There was a lot of rain and thunder, it even hailed for a little while! Probably because of that, the power went off almost the entire day. Sometimes it worked again for like ten minutes, then it went off again. We needed power for copying, songs, online test and visual support. We decided to cancel the lessons and organize a fun activity instead. The smaller children were punished for being outside during the hailstorm, they had to be in their rooms, that’s what the staff said. We played a game with the bigger children. That was quite convenient, because we were thinking about playing a game where children had to use a lot of English language.
The children got two pieces of paper. They had to write down two persons that everyone in the group knows. The children had to fold their pieces of paper and put it in a box. The children had to pair up. Every child has to describe or act out the person written on their card. Every time they guessed the person correctly, they could keep the piece of paper and got one point. This game has three rounds. The first round, the children had to describe the person, the second round they had to describe the person with just one word and the last round the children had to act out the person. One game is played with the same pieces of paper, so with the same persons written on them.
This was quite fun! This game is also in line with the lessons we gave to level 2 about appearance. The children had to describe persons, as we learned them. Although we weren’t teaching, we were still teaching, while the children didn’t realize that. Once a teacher, always a teacher .
We also baked pancakes with the children. We made them ourselves without a recipe and without sugar off course. The children seemed to really enjoy some quality time with us. One of the children taught us to bake Romanian pancakes. They were very delicious! It is just like baking a normal pancake, but just before it I ready, you have to put cheese on one side of the pancake and you have to fold it in two, like a pizza calzone.
For the rest of the day we worked on creating lessons for the children of Dare 2 Care, the primary school and for the staff, material for the lessons and on our report for the Teacher Training College.
In the evening, two children got in a conflict. This was pretty intense. The ambiance was tense in the entire house. For us these conflicts are very difficult because there are only a few children who speak English pretty well. In this case there was one child who understands and speaks English pretty well, and the other child can’t understand half of what we are saying. We only heard one side of the story.

This morning we taught all levels. The power didn’t go off, so everything we planned could just continue. For two of the level it was their last lesson of a topic (level 1: body parts, level 3: jobs). We will start next weekend on the topic Gruffalo for the little ones and the topic grammar for the bigger ones. Today we started a new topic with level 2: food. The lessons went just as we planned them. We notice that we anticipate better and better to each other during teaching. It is so nice to experience co-teaching. We don’t judge the teaching skills of each other, but we complement each other. We give each other space to teach. We feel like we can help the children really good because we can really invest time in the children, instead of running from child to child to help.
The rest of the day we were busy with evaluating, creating lessons, lesson materials and working on our report for our school.
