13-05-2016:
Yesterday evening we ate a traditional Romanian dish. It was some sort of semolina with a lot of cheese. It was way to fatty for us, so we both got a stomach-ache after eating this dish. Luckily this is the only time we suffer from the food here, we expected to suffer from the food a lot, but except for this dish, all of the food tastes good and is being served without sugar and meat, ideal! When we arrived at the primary school, one of the teachers came to me and said that we should teach two classes in the same classroom, because the other teacher had to go to the hospital. The teacher that was left, had to manage two classes again. She was extra happy with us teaching the children today. She also said a lot of parents came to her to say that they notice their kids trying to speak English at home, they were very enthusiastic about our lessons. We gave a lesson about the book Brown bear, brown bear what do you see? By Eric Carle. After a couple of lessons full of activities in line with the book, the children remembered most of the animals and their colours, fun to see! We played a board game with grade 0-2 about animals, that was quite challenging, an entire class all playing one game, but we managed it and the children were enthusiastic ! With the highest grades we played the bomb. The children have to name fruits when seeing a picture of it, meanwhile music is playing. When the music stops and it is your turn, you lose. This repeats itself until there is a winner. This was fun, but we noticed the children were trying to find our limits. The children didn’t listen as well as we would wish, so we decided to stop the lesson earlier.
The rest of the day we were preparing the lesson materials for Saturday and Sunday and creating lessons for Monday and Tuesday.

Today we had our first lesson of the topic let’s talk. We used the lessons of the week of the spring fever (week van de lentekriebels). The children had to draw their hand on a piece of paper and put the paper on their back with sticky tape. The children had to walk around and write a positive thing about the characteristic of the other in the finger of the drawn hand. The children responded positively. They liked the activity. They said during the evaluation they liked to give and receive compliments about their characteristics. The other lessons went quite well too.

Today we had our second lesson of the topic let’s talk, this was mainly about the anatomy of the female reproductive system. The children were giggly in the beginning, but after a little while they started to take it seriously and they acted interested. They obviously struggled with talking about this topic, because they don’t ever talk about anything what has something to do with their body. In the end the children told me they thought it was interesting to talk about it.

Today Ilse taught the children of the primary school alone and Lindi taught the staff alone.

Ilse:
Today was the first day for me to teach English at the school while Lindi was teaching the staff at the placement centre.
I was nervous to go this morning, because the last time I taught English alone has been a couple of weeks and I spoke the language of the teacher. Until now Lindi and I did this together. Now I had to do it alone.
But it went great. The children in the Kindergarten sang and played along. Also grade 0+2 and 1,3,4 did well. Even though I like teaching together with Lindi better, this was fun as well!
The children from the Kindergarten learned the Brown Bear song today.
Grade 0+2 revised all the learned animals with the stand up, sit down game. This was lots of fun. They didn't want to stop playing that game. It is a very competitive game!
And grade 1,3,4 had a lot of fun playing Go Fish (quartet).
A great day!!

Lindi:
I was quite nervous about today. I only taught children, never adults. I was a bit worried about doing this, but it turned out to be great. I taught them new words by playing games, the same as we do with the children, only we leave the childish things behind. It was great fun, the members of the staff really want to learn English, they translated a lot in Romanian, but said the English words right after the translation. For example I said eggs, they said ah, ouă, eggs. We were enjoying playing games together and the staff wrote down all of the words that occurred in the lesson, they really tried to pronounce and write the words correctly. It was strange to think about the fact that I am much younger than they are and that Ilse and I teach one of the children of the staff, but during the lesson it was just having fun with learning English. A great experience!

When we came back from our teaching, we evaluated the lessons and the goals we set for those lessons. Because we planned ahead until Sunday, we have time to work on our report for the Teacher Training, College.
