This was the first day of teaching at the school.
We arrived a couple of minutes early and just went to the class room of Kindergarten (3-6 years old). When we walked in the teacher was dancing with the children. During this dancing we got everything we needed for our class and sat the children down.
We started the lesson and it went well. But the teacher started to translate everything we said. This way the children did the same and named the colours in Romanian and not in English. So at the end of the lesson we did not manage to achieve the goals we had for the children. Note: tomorrow we will tell the teacher to not translate everything. Only if we ask for it.
Then we went on to class 0 + 2 (6 - 9 years old). They told us that today they wanted to swap the lessons. That would mean that we will first teach class 3 + 4 (8 - 13 years old) and later class 0 + 2. Of course this was no problem. So we started with class 3 + 4. We started by singing the song and as we explained the game in the song, we noticed that the level of the lesson was too high for the children. We still chose to keep going with the program we made. But this lesson was too hard for them. So for the next lesson (tomorrow) we will have to change the topic and the level. We need to teach them the basic items of English.
The last lesson (class 0 + 2) went well. We achieved all the goals but the children still need repetition. That is what is planned for the next lesson. The children had fun, we played games and the children learned new words.

In the afternoon we made a new a lesson for class 3 + 4 with a new topic; Food. We will start with Fruits. This way we can teach the children colours and the fruits.
We also thought about the lessons for the staff.

A great first day at the school!

Today was the second day of teaching at the school. We really get the hang of co-teaching! We started in the Kindergarten and did the same lesson we did yesterday, without translation. This lesson went as planned and the children learned a lot!
After teaching the Kindergarten we had a 10 minutes break and started teaching grade 0 and 2. This lesson was lots of fun. The children got to play games to repeat the pets. You could see that they usually don´t learn by playing, so this was a new experience for them. They were very enthusiastic.
Between the lesson of grade 0 + 2 and 1, 3 + 4 we had a talk with the teacher of grade 0 + 2 about the school, the village and the children that live here. We compared it to the Netherland and noticed some differences, for example the way they spend their spare time. In the Netherlands children often play computer games and here they play with a few toys mostly outside and with the nature (for example, in the break the children brought the teacher a couple of snails they found on the playground).
Then we started teaching (later than planned) grade 1, 3 and 4. We noticed that they don't really care what time you arrive. They are flexible and want to enjoy every moment of life because life is short and they don't want to waste it on watching their watch.
This lesson went much better than the lesson before. We changed the topic and made the lesson easier. You could see that this worked a lot better. The children liked the topic, learned a lot and were more confident in speaking English because it was the right level.
In the afternoon we created lessons for Monday (grade 1, 3 and 4) and for the staff for this Monday. We had to design, cut and glue a lot.
Tonight we are going in Sibiu with Catalina. She is taking us out for dinner and we get the chance to see the city! We are really looking forward to it because in the time we were here we only went to the supermarket in Sibiu, the village, the orphanage and the school. So we are glad we have the chance to see more of Romania!
